Issa in Spring

Haiku are a series of three lines of 5-7-5 syllables. Issa is a celebrated poet of the 18th -19th century in the mid-Edo period, but became famous in the Meiji period when his poems were adopted into school text books.
Below is one of his haiku and a series of interpretations.

桜咲く
大日本ぞ
日本ぞ

Cherry blossoms in bloom
What a beautiful country
Our Japan is.

Cherry in Japan
In magnificent bloom
Oh real Japan.

I am proud of Japan
When the cherry trees are in full blossom
That's Japan

Cherry blossoms
Bloom splendour o'er Japan
For our Japan

The season of cherry blossom
Oh, the glorious Japan
Oh, beautiful Japan.
